Lights, Camera, Action!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: I love a holiday and a reason to celebrate. We’re about to kick off Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial-official beginning of summer and I couldn’t be happier.

Looking back one year ago today, I had photographer Ryan Benyi arrive early in the morning to begin setting up a photo studio in my German Village kitchen. This day marked the day that Making the Midwest officially came to life and I got to see my vision and work become real. My crisp white kitchen was the perfect setting to give everyone a sneak peek of what I have in store. Ryan perfectly captured the story that I am beginning to portray. If you are like me, this year I will be home for the holiday, decorating and staging my house, getting it ready to entertain for the summer. All of my American flags and sailboats will make their debut again along with one of my favorite recipes from growing up.

I am so excited to share and hope that you too love it as much as I do. A summer staple of my childhood was an angel food cake with a chocolate frosting. It brings back memories of summer nights climbing trees at our local arboretum and trips up north to Canada with our very best friends. Below is the recipe for the frosting and (hint hint) a boxed angel food cake will do just fine to impress your guests. Here’s to a summer of happiness. Enjoy!

Angel food cake with Nanny’s Chocolate Frosting:

  • There are very few things I would ever make from a box! Actually, this might be the ONLY thing. But with an angel food cake you cannot go wrong straight from the box!

  • For the frosting: Combine 1 beaten jumbo egg, 1 heaping cup of sugar, 3 tablespoons whole milk, pinch of salt. Mix. Set aside.

  • Melt together 2 tablespoons of butter, 2 ounces of semi sweet Baker’s chocolate. Cool.

  • Add wet ingredients to cooled chocolate, stir together and heat until boils for 1 minute.

  • Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon vanilla paste and beat.

  • Apply to cake.

  • Note: Baker’s chocolate squares have changed sizes. Also measure with a kitchen scale to assure you have 2 ounces of chocolate.
